French Drain vs. Surface Drainage

French drains are designed primarily to collect groundwater and subsurface moisture within the soil, while surface drains and catch basins collect water flowing across patios, walkways and landscape areas. Depending on the property, both systems may be used together to help control water before it reaches the foundation or other vulnerable areas.

Gravity Drainage or Sump Pump?

When the property has sufficient natural elevation, French drain systems may discharge by gravity through a solid drainage line. When natural elevation is not available, the drainage system may need to terminate at a sump pump pit so groundwater can be pumped to an appropriate discharge location.

FAQ

What is a French drain?

A French drain is a subsurface drainage system typically consisting of perforated drainage pipe, gravel and filter fabric installed within a trench to help collect and redirect groundwater.

Where does French drain water go?

French drain water may discharge by gravity through a solid drainage line or into a sump pump system when natural elevation is not available.

How deep should a French drain be?

The proper depth depends on the water source, foundation depth, existing elevations and the specific drainage conditions of the property.

Can a French drain help protect a foundation?

French drainage may help reduce groundwater accumulation and saturated soil around foundations by collecting and redirecting subsurface water away from the structure.

Do I need a French drain or surface drainage?

French drains primarily address subsurface groundwater, while surface drains collect water flowing across the ground. Many drainage problems require a combination of both systems.

Can a French drain connect to a sump pump?

Yes. When gravity drainage is not possible, a French drain system may discharge into a sump pump pit so collected groundwater can be pumped away from the property.
